Reference Diagram Diagram showing how a cutter suction dredger works

How a Cutter Suction Dredger Works

A cutter head at the end of a submerged ladder loosens material on the riverbed or seabed. A dredge pump draws the loosened material and water up through a suction pipe, then discharges the mixture through a pipeline — often over long distances — to its placement site. Spuds anchor the vessel while swing winches move the cutter across the working area in a controlled arc.
